The rainbow prevents people from sinking; there is a smokeless, light-emitting fire; and three people—we all meet at the rainbow.

Mackerel Safranski visited various locations in Gangneung and listened to the tales told about the places. There was a strong impression, that Gangneung has preserved and continues to pass down the locations and the stories that would touch people’s heart and spirit. The tales of the city still feel vivid and alive, like an ‘eternal flame.’ The artist became conscious about those who are laboring to build buildings and create new spaces here. Upon discovering that among people working on construction sites are many from distant places across the sea, the artist follows whether they are also constructing the spaces for their own spirits and minds in this city. A narrative then echoes of three people that bring three different materials to the places indicated by the phrase found written all round the city. Through this narrative, Mackerel Safranski explores the lives of those who are building the next chapters of their stories in Gangneung.

b.1984, Jecheon. Lives and works in Seoul

Mackerel Safranski has been working on depicting and sequencing scenes that come to the artist intuitively, based on individual and collective memories, historical events, and cultural references. The artist focuses on the narratives that arise from connecting unrelated phenomena or scenes at the level of the unconscious and deconstructs them to expand outside the structure.

Starting with Young Korean Artists, (National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, 2008), the artist has exhibited at major art institutions. The artist’s major solo exhibitions include The hours, 3 Lights(A Lounge Gallery, 2021), and Accident of Flesh(Seoul Olympic Museum of Art, 2017), and major group exhibitions include The Four Cardinal Directions(MIUM Project Space, 2023), Wild Wilf Matter(Space After, 2022), the 11th Seoul Mediacity Biennale: One Escape at a Time(Seoul Museum of Art, 2021), and the Painting & Narrative(Museum SAN, 2020). The artist is currently an artist-in-residence at the 14th Seoul Art Space Geumcheon.
