Jazoo Yang, with her work, researches the unique geographical and historical contexts that permeate the architecture of the region, collecting and reconstructing traces of time. For this festival, the artist visited the Buldanggol Village in Jumunjin and created artwork based on the stories told by they heard from Mr. Kim Dong-sung, coincidentally met in the village. Mr. Kim mentions in his interview that, he would work together with his mother and the whole family to process pollack in Buldanggol, where they operated a pollack processing facility around 50 years ago. Using the vivid stories shared by Mr. Kim, the artist depicted the past and present of Buldanggol Village in her drawings. Jazoo Yang, by presenting Mr. Kim’s voice from the interview, along with the drawings, ultimately provides a multifaceted approach leading to the essence of the story.
*Buldanggol Village
Buldanggol Village, located in Jumunjin-eup, is an unusual coastal village with a larger scale than most along the East Coast. The village holds a sore history as a place where refugees resided during the Korean War, resulting in a maze-like residential area densely packed on a hilly terrain. Once a thriving city with active fishery in the past, it experienced a decrease in population following the decline of the fishing industry in the early 1990s. Recently, urban revitalization projects have begun, leading to significant improvements for the living conditions.
